The first big surprise of the tournament happened at Wimbledon on Thursday. Hubert Hurkacz had to raise the white flag in the second round.

Hurkacz had to give up against the Frenchman Arthur Fils with a score of 6:7, 4:6, 6:2 and 6:6 (8:9). In the fourth set, the Pole took a wrong step and hurt his knee. Afterwards, the limping Hurkacz, who tried to continue playing after a minute of treatment, was barely able to perform any more and thus the victory left Fils.

But Fils was only one point away from victory anyway. In addition, the sick Hurkacz would not be able to play another series. Poets played superbly. The 20-year-old Frenchman impressed with his aggressive game and won the first two sets. Fils also kept up with Hurkacz in the fourth round. The world number 34 seems capable of going far in this tournament with such performances.

For Hurkacz, the event is of course doubly bitter. The 28-year-old is considered a true grass court specialist and was recently in the final in Halle, where he lost to good friend Jannik Sinner. Due to his form, the world number 7 was considered one of the favorites to win Wimbledon, having failed to reach the semi-finals three years ago. It is still hoped that the Hurkacz service expert was not seriously injured on Thursday.
