KALEHE – After the recent tragedy in the territory of Kalehe (South Kivu), which claimed the lives of more than 400 people and caused enormous material damage, certain non-governmental organizations continue to provide assistance to the victims. This is the case of the non-profit organization EDI (Together for the development of Idjwi) which has the support of its partner in Belgium, the non-profit organization Rugendo.

An EDI delegation visited Nyamukubi on Saturday, May 20, 2023 to comfort fellow Congolese in this part of the country who have recently been affected by extensive flooding. Yves Pierre Minani and his EDI delegation handed over food and non-food items to the victims in Nyamukubi.

Mr. Minani explains the action to the editorial staff of CongoForum: “We handed over tarpaulins, blankets, basins, plates, pots, rice, oil, soap and sugar. Our hearts are full of compassion for our brothers and sisters who have lost almost everything and who have lived through this apocalypse”.

The victims are satisfied with the assistance received, which will be used to help more than 100 households. They are delighted with the donation from EDI and its Belgian partner. EDI is the first association on the island of Idjwi which comes to comfort the affected population, testify the beneficiaries; but the needs remain enormous.

Yves Pierre Minani emphasizes the efforts of the non-profit organization Rugendo to support this initiative: “Most of our assistance was made possible by our Belgian friends. Another Belgian friend joined in their efforts to add tarps, blankets, basins, plates and pans. The natural disaster in Kalehe was of enormous magnitude. We only went to Nyamukubi. But next door, there is also Bushushu who suffered the same damage. If I find other people of good will who agree to support us, I would like to drop off this donation at Bushushu. These compatriots also need our love. They need everything”.

EDI appeals to people of good will and also asks them to make efforts for the victims. “Life is far from returning to normal. The Congolese Red Cross continues to dig up corpses under the rubble, which is why epidemics are to be feared in the coming weeks”.

“Children need to finish the school year which is nearing the end, their schools have been destroyed”, explains Mr. Minani. “The shopping mothers have lost everything. Everyone has no more clothes. This is why we are launching this SOS through our partner Rugendo”.

During the last volcanic eruption in Goma, EDI and Rugendo had already assisted disaster victims three times in Idjwi. For the fourth time they had traveled to Goma to assist the survivors at the parish of Kanyaruchina.
