Dravid brings back old habit; Gavaskar presents Iyer with Test cap Dravid

Former India captain and record holder Sunil Gavaskar has presented the Test cap to Shreyar Iyer, who made his Test debut with a stunning half-century at the Kanpur International Test. Iyer wins Test cap from legend ahead of India-New Zealand first Test Gavaskar’s ‘signature’ kept Iyer’s ‘Shreyas’ at bay with a half-century. India finished the first day with 258 for four, while Iyer was at the crease with 75 runs.

Cricket fans are also applauding coach Rahul Dravid, who once brought back the old habit of the Indian cricket team. Ex-players handing over caps to debutants was a regular sight in the Indian team. Former players Shane Warne, Mark Taylor, Adam Gilchrist and Mark Waugh will be handing over the cap to players making their debuts in Australia as well.

But over the past few years, that has changed. After Ravi Shastri takes over as coach, the cap is handed over to the players making their international debut by the coach, captain, senior members of the team or senior members of the coaching staff.

This routine was rectified when Rahul Dravid took over as coach. Former India captain Ajit Agarkar presented the Twenty20 cap to Herschelle Patel, who made his debut in the Indian jersey in the Twenty20 series. Dravid is bringing back that old habit of bringing in the real Sunil Gavaskar to hand over the cap to Shreyas Iyer, who made his Test debut this time.
