A devastating fire broke out at a children’s and youth farm in Dresden Weißig on December 24th, causing significant damage to several structures on the property. Authorities confirmed that no one was injured in the blaze, but the incident has prompted a criminal investigation into its cause.
Extensive Damage Reported
According to a statement released by the police on Friday, a vehicle shelter housing technical equipment, along with vital hay supplies, an adjacent feed kitchen, and other smaller wooden buildings were either damaged or completely destroyed by the fire. The total extent of the material damage remains unknown at this time.
Rapid Response and Animal Rescue
The fire was first reported shortly after 7 p.m. local time, originating in a barn on the farm grounds. Firefighters worked tirelessly, bringing the blaze under control around 10 p.m., and remained on site throughout the night and into the morning to extinguish remaining hotspots.
A remarkable effort by neighbors and local volunteers ensured the safety of the animals residing at the farm. Several horses escaped during the initial chaos but were successfully recaptured unharmed. Due to the pervasive smell of smoke, residents in the surrounding area were alerted via a warning app. At the height of the emergency, a total of 148 emergency personnel were deployed to the scene, according to the fire department.
A Community Hub Impacted
The affected property, known as “Playground,” serves as a vital resource for children and youth work in the region. The farm provides a unique environment where young people can interact with and care for animals, including horses, goats, sheep, cats, and even a pig. The loss of these facilities represents a significant blow to the community.
“It’s a project for open children and youth work,” a senior official stated. “Children and young people can look after animals or simply play here.”
The criminal police have launched a full investigation to determine the origin of the fire. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
