Dresden – A mixture of concrete and wood with a glass roof on top – this is how project developer Gateway imagines the former Robotron-Building at Lingnerallee 3 (currently City-Herberge).
The GDR block will be retained, but is to be completely rebuilt, optically adapted to the surrounding residential area in timber construction, which is also being built by Gateway.
Instead of the youth hostel, a hotel and offices are to move in, with shops, cafés and a supermarket on the ground floor. But there was criticism when it was presented to the design committee.
“One version of the roof construction looks like a box, the other like a greenhouse. That doesn’t seem to have been fully developed to us,” says architecture professor Wolfgang Lorch (62), the new head of the commission.
