Wien Energie and OMV work together when it comes to heating. They are now drilling into Vienna’s hot water storage tank at a depth of 5,000 meters.

There is an undiscovered treasure beneath Vienna in the form of hot water deposits. Two major domestic economic powers now want to raise this and are working together to achieve this: Wien Energie and OMV have founded their own company, deep, to expand sustainable district heating. The aim is to develop deep geothermal energy systems with an output of up to 200 megawatts and thus generate climate-neutral district heating for the equivalent of up to 200,000 Viennese households. Long-term positive for the price20 million euros are budgeted for the planning. The first plant in Aspern will cost around 80 million euros. A win-win situation for both companies. Wien Energie operates one of the largest district heating networks in Europe and has the customers, and OMV contributes the know-how for earth drilling to a depth of up to 5,000 meters. What do customers get out of it? Wien Energie boss Michael Strebl: “Thanks to independence from international fossil markets, prices will also become more stable.” The energy supply will thus become more regional.
