Jakarta: In Indonesia, the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, four people have been punished under the strict Sharia law for drinking alcohol. These four citizens were flogged by the executioner in front of the police. According to the report of Indonesian newspaper Kompas, four citizens named M. Fais Akbar, Aulia Syahaputra, Yusdi, Kukri Ramadhan were given 19 to 42 lashes for drinking alcohol. The flogging was carried out by an unknown executioner, who is often seen wearing brown clothes.

Beaten in front of police

According to the pictures of the incident, two of the convicts were wearing white kurta-like clothes while the other two were in red thin cloth half-jackets with the name of the District Attorney’s Office written on them. They were taken to the middle of a room and asked to bow their heads before receiving the punishment. The brutal beating was temporarily halted after one of the men cried out in pain after receiving 10 lashes. Reports claim that he was offered a drink by doctors to check his condition before the caning.

Sharia law is applicable in Aceh province

According to Mail Online, the head of the Banda Aceh District Prosecutors Office confirmed the sentences, saying: “Today, the execution of the caning sentence for four people convicted of violating khmar or being drunk has been completed.” Aceh is the only province in Indonesia to have implemented Sharia law after gaining special autonomy in 2001, which was strengthened by a peace deal with Jakarta in 2015. Sharia criminalises gambling, drinking alcohol, sex outside marriage and homosexual relations.

Sharia law applies to non-Muslims as well

Non-Muslims in Aceh are also subject to Sharia law, with the Quran explicitly describing drugs as the ‘work of the devil’. Earlier this week, Aceh’s district prosecutors’ office was preparing to cane two men who admitted to having sex outside marriage. They now face up to 100 lashes if found guilty. The two men were arrested by police raiding a boarding house.
