The Greek Police are taking increased measures on the national and provincial roads of the region, as well as in the urban fabric of the city of Ioannina, during the period of the Fifteenth of August celebration.

These measures are deemed imperative, after the continuous fatal accidents that have occurred in our region in recent months, as a result of which our fellow citizens lose their lives on the asphalt.

The main causes that lead to traffic accidents are, according to the commander of the Ioannina Traffic Department Grigoris Karras, the excessive speed developed by the drivers, as well as driving under the influence of alcohol.

For this reason, he called on the drivers, given the movements that will be made these days on the provincial road network, due to the holding of events and festivals, to “adopt” the idea of the “driver of the company”, making sure each time to perform duties driven by a person who will not consume alcohol.

Also noteworthy is another element recorded in the violations confirmed during the summer period we are going through. More than 100 are the offenses related to driving without a driver’s license. This, according to Mr. Karras, mainly concerns minors, who ride bicycles to the greatest extent, without having a driver’s license!

From then on, the presence of the men and women of the Traffic Police will be intense on the streets these days, as part of the planning of the Hellenic Police Headquarters for full and continuous activation, coordination and supervision of all the Traffic Services, in order to ensure the conditions smooth and safe road traffic throughout the road network.

In addition, throughout the implementation of the measures, patrol cars, motorcycles and conventional vehicles will be made available, with the corresponding personnel and equipment for the effective policing of the country’s road network.

During the festive period, traffic bans on trucks with a maximum permissible weight of more than 3.5 tons will apply on the highways, as stated in a relevant Joint Ministerial Decision.

In this context, EL.AS. recommends that citizens, before traveling, carry out a technical inspection of their vehicle and be informed about the state of the road network and weather conditions, be particularly careful when driving and observe the rules of the Road Traffic Code, respect road signs and to comply with the instructions of the traffic police, not to use mobile phones or other devices while driving, which distract their attention, to protect the children riding in the vehicle by using child seats, to necessarily “wear” the seat belts, like helmets on motorcycles, not to overestimate their driving skills and the technical capabilities of their vehicles and to respect and protect their fellow passengers and fellow road users by driving their vehicle responsibly and carefully.
