No matter how much space is explored, its surprises never cease. Space travel is also full of surprises. What will the soldiers experience during space travel and what will they eat? How do they eat? Ex-NASA astronaut Nicole Stott has shared interesting information about the food and water problems of soldiers in space in a BBC media program.
During his long career, Stott visited the International Space Station twice and spent a total of 100 days there. He mentions living there with food specially prepared for space travel. Diets for spaceflight must be designed for zero-gravity conditions.
There will be no bread as spilled pieces should avoid floating. Instead, there will be rolls called tortillas, says Stott. The food eaten there is highly processed to reduce their weight. Water is absorbed from food. Before eating, the food is moistened with hot water and sprinkled with water.
Staying hydrated while in space is very important. But where does the water come from? Astronauts carry some water with them when they leave Earth. The rest of the water requirement will be met through recirculation. Stott also explains what water is recycled and used for treatment.
The primary sources of water are waste water, moisture and urine from the spacecraft’s fuel cells. Do you know what NASA has to say to people who think it’s gross to drink my recycled urine? It is said that the water filtered here is purer than the drinking water on earth.
