Drivers fined AED 51,000 for crossing red signal in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi Police has decided to impose a fine of Dh51,000 on drivers who cross the red signal on the roads. Repeat offenders will lose their license. Violators are detected with the help of surveillance cameras. Excessive speeding at signals and jumping to overtake before the green signal is off will fall under the ambit of violations. The fine for crossing a red signal is usually Dhs 1000.

12 black marks will appear on the license at once. Under the revised law, a vehicle that crosses a red signal will be impounded. If you want to get rid of it, you will have to pay 50,000 dirhams. Thus the loss per mistake would be 51000 dirhams. The driver’s license will be impounded by the police for 6 months. If the impounded vehicles are not recovered after payment of fine, the vehicle will be sold at public auction.

After notifying the violators through mobile messages, the vehicles will be auctioned by advertising in newspapers. If the vehicle is not worth a fine, the auction proceeds minus the remaining amount will remain in the traffic file as a liability on behalf of the vehicle owner.

Serious offenses other than signal violation:

∙ A fine of Dh50,000 if police patrol vehicles are hit or police property is damaged in an accident.

∙ Even if the car is racing on the roads without permission, the fine is the same amount.

∙ Vehicles will be impounded in traffic cases such as attaching fake number plates, tampering, erasing the numbers on the plates and driving in a manner that endangers the safety of people. A fine of 50,000 dirhams has to be paid if the owner wants to get them back.
