France lowers the minimum age to obtain a license and be able to drive, which will be established at 17 years. The measure, which will enter into force on January 1, 2024, was announced on June 20 by the French Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, in the digital newspaper Brut

Until now, French 17-year-olds could have their driving license approved, and drive accompanied, but they could not drive alone until they were 18 years old. With the modification of the norm, they will be able to do so from the age of 17.

The initiative is part of a package of measures proposed by the French government, including extending the aid of 500 euros to apprentices to finance obtaining the permit. Now students of the FP degree will also be able to request it.

The French Parliament, for its part, adopted on June 12 a proposal aimed at improving information for young people on ways to finance a driving license and to reduce the time before the test.

In Europe, most countries have established the minimum driving age at 18 years, as is the case in Spain. However, there are some countries that allow 17-year-olds to drive; only one country accompanied driving from the age of 16; and only in the Isle of Man is driving allowed from the age of 16.

Despite the fact that studies show that traffic accidents are the leading cause of death among young people between the ages of 24 and 18, the French government has defended this lowering of the minimum age on the grounds that there have not been more accidents in those European countries that have a driving license at the age of 17.
