Every drop counts. Despite the spring rainfall, which re-wet the soil after a dry winter, the groundwater level is dangerously low at the very beginning of summer. And the forecasts are not really reassuring.

Four months after a first decree, a consequence of the winter drought, the prefecture of Yvelines has therefore decided to take new measures “essential to save water and guarantee the priority uses of health and public safety, civil security as well as than drinking water supply. They apply in particular to 38 municipalities in the south-east of the department.

This area, which includes towns such as Chevreuse, Trappes or Vélizy-Villacoublay, has in fact been placed in “alert situation”, the third level out of five possible in the crisis scale. A change of status not without consequence for individuals, companies or communities.

For example, the watering of vegetable gardens, gardens or sports grounds is prohibited between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. It is also forbidden to fill a private pool or wash your car at home. On the side of the farmers, irrigation is authorized subject to conditions of timetables and equipment.

The center of Yvelines still on “enhanced alert”

This is only a taste of the regulations that have prevailed for several weeks in the so-called “center” area which includes 82 municipalities including Plaisir, Beynes, Élancourt and even Mantes-la-Ville. After reviewing the situation, this vast diagonal remains in “high alert situation”. It is always forbidden to water the lawn or decorative plants. The watering can is only authorized before 9 a.m. or after 8 p.m. for planters and vegetable gardens. Ditto for crop sprinkler irrigation.

No change either with regard to the last two areas of the department, those called “Seine” and “South West” which are still in a situation of “vigilance” with simple recommendations and awareness raising for everyone. The prefect of Yvelines calls there “once again, everyone, individual and professional, to be economical in the use they make of water”.

Last year’s experience suggests that things could change quickly. In the summer of 2022, the first water restrictions were decided at the end of July. The alert situation had been reached throughout the department and the south-eastern zone had even been placed in a state of crisis. The maximum level.
