The walk to put her two-and-a-half-year-old child to sleep turned into a tragedy. A two-year-old girl drowned in a river during the festival in the small village of Villembits, in the Hautes-Pyrénées, over the weekend and the prosecutor of Tarbes confirmed on Tuesday that it is a accident.
A relative of the family, present at the time of the tragedy, said Tuesday that the mother of the child had stumbled in the dark and fell into the water with the stroller. “The mother (…) to put the little one to sleep had moved away from the light and the music. So she was by the river, it was dark, she didn’t see a hole in the ground, and the stroller tipped over in the water, and so did the mom,” she said.
According to the same source, “the stroller was blocked” and the mother “did not manage to free it. She even had trouble getting herself out of the river (…) She immediately warned us and (…) we managed to get the little one out of the water and we gave her a cardiac massage”.
Died Sunday morning despite the help of several people
She could not be revived despite the intervention of several people, then firefighters and gendarmes dispatched to the scene. Transported to the pediatric emergency room of the Pau hospital, she died there on Sunday morning.
The prosecutor of Tarbes, Bérengère Prud’homme, confirmed Tuesday “that it is an accident”, adding “that the opening of a judicial investigation is not excluded at this stage” from the investigations. The mayor of Villembits, Henry Lacoste, had declared the day before that he had “been warned at 3 o’clock in the morning”. “I was immediately there. But it was too late,” he added.
He had specified that the mother of the child, “very shocked”, had been transferred to Lannemezan hospital by the firefighters. “It’s a dramatic story (…) It was supposed to be a party, and it’s a disaster,” he said. An investigation was opened and entrusted to the research brigade of the Tarbes company, with the support of the Toulouse research section.
