Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapos said that DSCC has taken a five-year program aimed at creating employment for all families.
He gave this information while announcing the budget for the development of better Dhaka at the Mayor Mohammad Hanif Auditorium in Nagar Bhaban in the capital on Wednesday (July 31). At this time, he announced the budget of DSCC for the fiscal year 2024-25 of Tk 6,760,740,000.
Mayor Tapas said, we see with great regret, many voters living permanently in Dhaka and families paying house tax in Dhaka South City Corporation area are still unemployed. They are deprived of proper employment. Therefore, I have taken this program for a period of five years with the objective and goal of creating employment for all the families of Dhaka residents. The name of this project will be ‘Mayor Sheikh Tapas’ employment program, Dhaka will be a jobless city’.
He said, we will be dedicated not only for infrastructure development, but also for their family support and employment arrangements. Be it through capital or allotment of shops, we will stand by the families.
He also said that Dhaka South City Corporation must fulfill the responsibility of providing employment to the people of Dhaka. Dhaka will be a jobless city. We have more than doubled revenue in the last four years. DSCC is now a viable institution. At the same time, we have made this organization a corruption-free organization. With the cooperation of the people of Dhaka, DSCC should be developed as a modern and developed city in the future.
The mayor said that Nalgola Bhawal Rajbari, which was under the control of illegal occupants for a long time, has been freed from occupation. This historic structure worth Rs 300 crore was occupied by a cycle for several decades and changed its original form. We have taken the initiative of renovation to bring back the original form of the establishment free from encroachment. Besides, our overall initiative is continuing to establish Nalgola Bhawal Rajbari as a tourist destination by highlighting its history and heritage.
Moreover, the mayor said that a letter has already been sent to all concerned including the Ministry of Housing and Public Works and Dhaka District Administration, requesting to hand over historical buildings such as Rooplal House, Bara Katra, Chhota Katra to DSCC for renovation and preservation.
Mentioning that there are 74 gazetted heritage buildings in Dhaka city, he said, 66 of the heritage buildings are located in the area under DSCC. Along with these 66 structures, an initiative has been taken to create seven heritage zones with some other important and historical structures. Among them, the program of establishing ring number 5 from Dhakeshwari temple to Lalbagh fort and Mridha mosque to Shamshanghat area is under implementation. At present, the recruitment of consultants for detailed design is in progress.
Apart from conservation and restoration of the heritage of historical buildings, DSCC has been organizing the traditional Saccharine Utsav regularly since 2020 and Pitha Utsav, which is one of the mainstays of Bengali folk tradition, regularly since 2022. He said that ‘Bangla New Year-1431’ was celebrated for the first time in 2024 in the premises of Nagar Bhavan.
