Eight centimeters long and with blatant decorations – DSDS juror, rapper and entrepreneur Katja Krasavice (26) likes extreme nails. And is therefore right in line with the beauty trend. The modern nail extensions made of acrylic or gel are much stronger and more durable than classic false fingernails, which are simply glued to your own nails.

But what happens if I get stuck with it somewhere? Can I also wear them at work? And what do they cost? BILD answers the most important questions with two experts.

How do nail extensions work?

Tips, i.e. artificial extensions, are glued to the natural nails. A liquid is then applied to create a uniform, longer nail, which can then be shaped and decorated as desired.

In the case of gel nails, several layers of acrylic gel are applied one after the other, each layer must harden under UV light. Gel nails cannot be detached from the natural nail and will either grow out or need to be sanded down.

The liquid for acrylic nails hardens quickly in the air, so the modeling has to be done quickly and should therefore be left to professionals. However, acrylic nails are more resistant and look more natural than gel nails. They can also be easily removed again with acetone.

what’s on the toilet

Friends of fingertip art say: You hold objects differently with long nails. Use the palms of the fingers rather than the fingertips. Also applies to (toilet) paper.

How hygienic are extreme nails?

“Artificial nails are not hygienic,” warns Prof. Volker Steinkraus (69), dermatologist and medical director of the Dermatologikum Hamburg: “Cleaning under the nail and on the nail bed is hardly possible, so that germs that can cause infections collect there. Impurities can also occur when sticking on, which can damage the real nail. And acrylates, chemical substances in the material of the artificial nails, are known to be strong allergy triggers.”

What does everyday life look like with it?

Prof. Steinkraus: “Everyday actions such as closing a button become tedious with very long nails. The nails encourage unnatural movements so as not to injure yourself. In the worst case, a nail breaks off – usually not at the predetermined breaking point because the material is so hard: There is a risk of injury to the nail bed and fingertips.”

Can my boss forbid me extreme nails?

For example, it is hardly possible to practice manual trades such as hairdressing, baking, etc. with overly long nails. They are also extremely impractical for physiotherapists or masseurs.

BUT: “Fundamentally, fingernail design, clothing and tattoos are the private matter of the employee and do not concern the employer,” says Nicole Mutschke (47), specialist lawyer for labor law.

However, the employer may make regulations in exceptional cases – namely if the employer has a legitimate interest which outweighs the employee’s interest in wearing body jewelry.

Nicole Mutschke: “Here it depends on the area in which the employee works. Of course, the employer must always ensure that there is no risk to their employees’ health, especially when working with machines. Or if it is necessary to wear disposable gloves and this is not possible with very long fingernails or there is a risk of the gloves tearing, a regulation by the employer may be permissible from the point of view of hygiene.”

Hygiene also plays an important role in a judgment by the Aachen Labor Court in 2019. The court agreed with an employer who always required short and unpainted fingernails from a caregiver in a nursing home. And this despite the fact that the employee did not work in direct care and only rarely served food (Az: 1 CA 1909/18).

How much do artificial nails cost?

The initial modeling of acrylic nails costs around 60 euros in the nail salon, that of gel nails around 50 euros, the refilling after four weeks at the latest up to 30 euros. Embellishments such as rhinestones or a special pattern on the paint are charged extra.

But you can also lend a hand at home. A gel nail starter set with a UV lamp to harden the material costs around 25 euros. However, special caution is required here:

● Hands and tools must be disinfected.

● Anyone doing other people’s nails should wear disposable gloves because of the risk of infection.

● Adhesive should not touch the skin.

● UVA radiation can cause cancer, so keep the duration of the radiation as short as possible and preferably apply sunscreen to your hands 20 minutes before the modeling.

● Beauticians recommend trying on artificial practice hands first.
