The algorithm that limits the maximum revs in the Superbike World Championship is a measure that was introduced a few years ago to try to match the conditions of two and four cylinder motorcycles, although currently all the machines on the grid are four-cylinder, either in line or in V.

The algorithm is based on the performance of the engine of each motorcycle in its standard configuration, that is, the one that is sold to the public. From there, an average revolutions per minute (rpm) is calculated. and an extra percentage is applied to it, which is the limit that a superbike engine can reach.

This limit may vary throughout the season according to the results obtained by each manufacturer, with the aim of maintaining the competitiveness and interest of the championship. Thus, if a brand clearly dominates the races, the rpm limit can be reduced, while if another brand is far behind, it can be increased. At this time, for example, Ducati and Álvaro Bautista have won eight of the nine races held so farplus two podium finishes for Michael Rinaldi.

The rpm limit can also change when a manufacturer introduces a new model or a significant evolution of its motorcycle, as happened two years ago with the arrival of the BMW M 1000 RR. In these cases, the championship technical committee reviews the algorithm and sets a new limit based on the changes made to the engine.

The FIM and Dorna reserve the right to modify the maximum rev limits every three races, and taking advantage of the fact that WorldSBK will make its fourth stop at the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya starting tomorrow, Friday, the organization of the championship has announced a trim of 250 rpm. in the engine of all Ducati Panigale V4 R, going from 16,100 rpm. starting at 15,580 rpm. that from now on Italian motorcycles will be limited.

Not only has the Ducati lost some of its maximum ceiling since this fourth appointment; the FIM has also reported that Kawasaki will use five concession points to increase the rev limit of his Kawasaki ZX-10 RR by 250rpm – so all Ninjas will go above 14,600rpm. They had been set at 14,850 rpm since the beginning of the season, which should translate into a little more power and speed.

Each manufacturer accumulates a series of concession points throughout the season according to the results of their pilots, and can later exchange them for ‘tokens’ that allow them to work on areas that are not allowed, such as the chassis or, in the case of kawasaki, at the limit that your engine can reach.

Following these changes announced by the WorldSBK organization, the limits by brand and model are established as followssubject to further changes within three rounds:

– BMW M 1000 RR 15,500 rpm.
– Honda CBR 1000 RR-R 15,600 rpm.
– Ducati Panigale V4 R 15.850 rpm.
– Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10 RR 14.850 rpm.
– Yamaha YZF-R1 14.950 rpm.
