Due to broken air conditioning – film treasure in the Federal Archives threatened – domestic politics

by time news

It sounds like a story from a developing country: Because the air conditioning in the Koblenz Federal Archives has failed irreparably, historical films of inestimable value have to move to a makeshift hall in Berlin.

This emerges from a letter from the Federal Ministry of Finance to the budget committee that BILD has received.

Accordingly, rooms in Goerzallee 309 in Berlin-Lichterfelde will be rented for 11.78 million euros over the next ten years.

The reason: “The irreparable failure of the air conditioning in the film archive in Koblenz made it necessary for the Federal Archives to immediately rent a suitable replacement warehouse for the professional storage of the flammable cellulose nitrate films,” writes State Secretary Bettina Hagedorn (65, SPD).

The old refrigeration systems “can no longer be repaired for technical and economic reasons after the assessment by the responsible building administration.”

Professional film storage in Koblenz can only be maintained with “emergency solutions”. Try “by ventilating regularly” and “dehumidifying”, as it goes on in the letter.

More than 3500 films (700 hours) from 1914 to 1999 are stored in Koblenz, including those from the Nuremberg Trials and all the cinema newsreels since 1945.
