Manila: Due to the severe shortage of onion in the Philippines, the price has risen to an unprecedented level. A kilo of onion sells for up to Rs.3,000. There has been a severe shortage of vegetables in the Philippines for the past few months. Farmland organizations had said that 21,000 tonnes of vegetables would have to be imported to contain rising costs. In this situation, there has been a heavy demand for onions for the past few days.

Due to this, the price of onion has increased 10 times and a kilo of onion is sold up to Rs.3,000. Farmers have been advised to harvest early to deal with the loss. On the one hand, despite the shortage, there have been complaints that the hoarders buy onions from the farmers at a low price and store them for several months, creating an artificial shortage. Due to this, the farmers have expressed regret that they are not getting the proper price. Food inflation has also touched double digits due to scarcity of vegetables, the government said.
