Just ahead of its console release on September 22, 2026, Funcom’s open-world survival game Dune: Awakening has drawn technical praise from British military survival advisor John Hudson, who commended the title for capturing the harsh, weather-sculpted realities of surviving on the desert planet Arrakis.
Military Survival Advisor Analyzes Arrakis Realism
As Funcom prepares for the console launch of its upcoming open-world survival game, the developers brought in outside expertise to evaluate how the digital environment stacks up against actual extreme landscapes. The UK Military’s Chief Survival Instructor and Consultant, John Hudson, examined the gameplay and promotional material to test the survival mechanics against real-world desert principles.
Drawing on his experience designing and running survival training in extreme environments, including deserts, Hudson highlights the realism of Dune: Awakening’s weather-sculpted rock formations and unforgiving landscapes. Hudson evaluated the treacherous conditions players face on Arrakis, focusing on the scarcity of water, the necessity of shade, exposure management, and the constant threat of sandstorms. Rather than treating the setting as a generic backdrop, the survival expert noted how the game structures its world as an active challenge requiring meticulous resource management, establishing shelter, forming alliances, and relying on group coordination to carry the resources needed to endure while contending with the planet’s immense sandworms.
“The rocky outcrops that the team of Dune: Awakening have built are incredibly realistic,” says Hudson. “They look like they have been sandblasted by desert storms. They look sculpted by the wind. Yet within them you can see some hope of refuge.”

Authentic Film Links and Unreal Engine 5 Visuals
Inspired by Frank Herbert’s seminal sci-fi novel and Legendary Entertainment’s award-winning films, the game has a direct connection to the cinematic universe. During the pre-production phase, developers visited the shooting locations of Dune: Part Two to take inspiration directly from the source for an authentic experience. Built using Unreal Engine 5, the survival title aims to bridge the gap between high-end graphical fidelity and sandbox gameplay mechanics, delivering a AAA title with the visual style of Hollywood screens to the largest possible audience. Players navigating the open world must secure basic necessities—such as extracting hydration sources from dead bodies and finding food—while managing extreme daytime heat that makes moving at night the wiser choice.
Player Freedom, Combat, and Territory Building
The gameplay loop blends player-versus-environment and player-versus-player conflict, keeping participants on edge against local Fremen, non-Arrakis Atreides, and the natural hazards of the planet. During character creation, players select who their teacher was to determine initial skills, with further abilities unlocked via an extensive RPG progression system where players climb in reputation and can even work as a contractor completing tasks. Combat spans close-quarters fighting, ranged combat, and machine operations utilizing iconic craft such as ornithopters, alongside a political system and competitive tasks where players race against each other to complete objectives for rewards.
Beyond combat, the game emphasizes architectural creativity and sandbox freedom, allowing players to build giant sci-fi palaces or quiet houses to relax with friends while viewing endless sands. The system even allows resourceful players to function as architects, crafting unique blueprints and selling them to other participants. Funcom utilizes its rich experience from Conan Exiles in this open-world survival game, where players can fight their way up the ladders or build majestic structures.
Console Launch Timelines and Early Access Tiers
The title is scheduled to arrive on home consoles on September 22, 2026. For buyers who purchase the Deluxe and Ultimate editions, an early head start period opens beginning September 17. Console purchasers, alongside both new and returning PC players, will immediately gain access to all additions and improvements introduced since the PC launch, as well as new content and updates arriving in September.
