Dune on Italia 1: film plot, cast, how long it lasts, books, Timothée

by time news

For lovers of science fiction film tonight on Italia 1 at 9.20pm there is Da by Denis Villeneuve with Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya. After Arrival and the sequel to Blade Runner, is the Canadian director’s third film in the sci-fi genre, which he pushed even further. Giving away two and a half hours of pure visual wonder.

The film, on TV for the first time, arrives just as it arrives at the cinema he’s out Dune – part due. And it serves as an introduction and review for the second part which gets to the heart of the action on Arrakis and Paul Atreides’ existential dramas described by the writer Frank Herbert (a saga in 6 books, released between 1965 and 1985).

A third part is yet to be defined, in fact, there is no official production announcement; even if online there is talk of Hans Zimmer (the composer of the soundtrack) already working on the scores. A film about Dune was made in 1984 by David Lynch, but did not achieve the desired success. Jodorowsky also studied the complex subject, unfortunately the project failed.

Dune: the plot

Paul (Timothée Chalamet), descendant of the Atreides family, is the protagonist of this space and epic adventure. His family receives control of Arrakis from the Emperor, after years in the hands of the Harkonnens. A planet dominated by desert sandsfrom the power of Spice, from the sun and from Fremen, an indigenous peoplecapable of surviving those extreme conditions thanks to self-refrigerating suits designed by themselves. They have been awaiting the arrival of the Muad’dib for centuries (the Messiah) who frees them from the dominion of the people. Paul could be the chosen one.

The Harkonnen, led by Baron Vladimir (Stellan Skasgard), implement a diabolical plan to destroy the Atreides family once they arrive on Arrakis. After the attack and death of Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac), Paul and his mother Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) manage to escape and find refuge among the Fremen and in those places inhabited by giant worms, the true masters of Dune.

Here Paul meets Chani (Zendaya), a Fremen he has already met in his dreams. In Dune – part due (at the cinema) the story continues and the fight becomes epic.

Denis Villeneuve, the director who brought luster back to sci-fi

Con Arrival from 2016 Denis Villeneuve brought some fresh air to the world of science fiction cinema earning acclaim, first at the Venice Film Festival, then at the Oscars with a trio of nominations.

Then they arrived Blade Runner 2049featuring a new android hunter (Ryan Glosling), and Dune in 2021bringing attention back to masterpiece by Frank Herbert and proving that it could be done better than David Lynch’s 1984 film.

Villeneuve’s consecration occurs precisely thanks to Dune and above all to the second part of the blockbuster, at the cinema these days, and already praised by world critics.

Dune – part due: the plot

The journey continues Paul Atreides joining Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen to avenge those who killed his father Leto Atreides.

At the center of the action, much more spectacular than in the first chapter, there is a timeless conflict between the forces of good and evil. On the one hand the Fremen, a representation of humanity fighting for survival; on the other, the Harkonnen, a manifestation of corruption, violence and greed.

But there is much more. Paul Atreides is the one who sees into the future and who will guide the Fremen people towards a destiny already written. In a powerful conflict, reminiscent of Peter Jackson’s battles in his The Lord of the Rings, the love story between Chani and Paul begins.
