The Citizen Participation Council appointed Dunia Martínez as President of the Judicial Council of Ecuador for her “notorious integrity.”

Dunia Martínez was appointed on July 8, 2024 as the new president of the Judicial Council. The Council for Citizen Participation and Social Control (Cpccs) reported that the decision was made based on her “notorious integrity, track record and proposals for institutional improvement.

Martínez was part of the shortlist sent by the National Court of Justice. Telmo Molina and Hugo Landívar were also present.

In the continuation of the 34th extraordinary session of the plenary session of the Cpccs, President Andrés Fantoni stated that the public hearings in which the candidates presented their proposals for institutional improvement were carried out.

With six councillors present, because Nicole Bonifaz reported that she was not allowed to enter, there were three votes in favour and three abstentions. With the deciding vote of Fantoni, Dunia Martínez was appointed. After being appointed, the resolution will be issued to the National Assembly to proceed with the inauguration.

Who is Dunia Martinez?

The new president of the Judicial Council holds a PhD in Jurisprudence from the University of Azuay and a Master’s degree in Law with a mention in Economic Law from the Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar.

He was a member of the Qualifying Commission for the renewal of judges of the Constitutional Court in 2022 and is a member of the Ibero-American Institute of Constitutional Law.

In addition, he has worked in the National Congress, the Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar, the Electoral Contentious Tribunal, the Constitutional Court and the Higher Education Council, as shared by the Multidisciplinary Network of Jurists.
