Duolingo Hands Out Free Apples Outside New York Apple Store

Apple launched its foldable iPhone Duo on October 23, 2026, triggering both consumer queues and unexpected street marketing. Language app Duolingo capitalized on the shared name by deploying its green owl mascot outside the New York Fifth Avenue store to hand out free apples.

When Apple finally put its first foldable device on sale, language platform Duolingo was waiting nearby with an apple cart and a familiar mascot dressed like an Apple Store employee. The stunt transformed a months-old online joke into a physical sidewalk activation outside the iconic Apple Fifth Avenue store in New York. Shoppers standing near any Apple retail location that Friday might have stumbled upon a novel substitute for a fresh gadget: a pushcart distributing Free Apple Duo. The vehicle carried vibrant green fruit, whereas the character wore a dark top mimicking the uniform of Apple Store personnel. No partnership and no new phone were involved—just Duolingo finding an extremely obvious joke and committing to it completely.

The campaign relied on a simple phonetic coincidence between the new hardware and Duo, the green owl whose pushy push notifications have become central to the learning app’s brand identity. Back in September, when Apple first previewed its hardware line, the company shared a picture of the foldable device alongside the mascot, accompanied by the caption, let’s hope i don’t get cracked. The initiative mirrors the brand’s phonetic fashion line, which transformed difficult designer names into wearable pronunciation exercises during New York Fashion Week. The Instagram carousel generated more than 88,000 likes within its first day, according to Creapills.

Free Apples and QR Code Lesson Reminders Outside Fifth Avenue

Passersby near the launch queues encountered a cargo bike labeled “Apple Duo” rather than an authorized retail queue. The cart held bright Granny Smith apples adorned with apple-shaped stickers of the green owl. The fruit also gave the language app a route back to its everyday product by reminding people to do a lesson.

Each sticker carried a direct instruction for anyone who stopped by the cart. Each sticker featured the words “Do your lesson” alongside a QR code pointing toward the learning platform. Street banners positioned nearby built further upon the joke by framing the mascot right across the crease of the fresh hardware, accompanied by the slogan This is Duo. Consumers comparing the Duo against legacy foldable models also drove nearly nine times as many positive mentions for Apple than for Samsung, recording 76,209 references compared to Samsung’s 8,414.

Durability Questions and High Repair Bills Hit the iPhone Duo Launch

While marketing stunts filled the sidewalk, actual buyers faced immediate questions regarding hardware reliability and out-of-warranty expenses. On October 23, MacRumors flagged early screen failures dubbed “CrackGate,” reporting that an Australian owner’s inner screen cracked after fewer than 20 openings and roughly six hours of use. Green apples with QR codes greeted Apple store queues as owners posted split foldable screens, giving Duolingo’s reactive marketing an unexpected connection to Apple’s hardware problems.

Those durability reports quickly collided with steep maintenance figures for the premium device. Apple charges $999 to replace an out-of-warranty inner screen on the $1,999 phone, leaving first-time foldable buyers to weigh the risk of a repair bill worth half the initial purchase price.

Samsung, AirAsia MOVE, and Durex Join the Real-Time Marketing Rush

Duolingo was far from the only brand to capitalize on Apple’s entry into the foldable category.

  • Samsung Singapore welcomed Apple to the market with a Welcome to the fold post while Samsung Mobile spotlighted its Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra.
  • AirAsia MOVE published a series highlighting things you can buy instead of that ‘new’ phone.
  • Durex India posted an image of a folded item with the text, Guess who finally tried a new position, adding the caption, A little flexibility goes a long way.

Between August 12 and September 11, the iPhone 18 series accumulated 464,674 mentions and 21.5 million interactions on a worldwide scale according to CARMA, a media intelligence agency, with the iPhone Duo responsible for 49.2% of those launch-focused discussions. In the United States and Thailand, conversations centered heavily on technological advancements and celebrity endorsements, whereas Japan, India, and Brazil focused more intensely on cost, overall worth, camera capabilities, and usability.
