As the State Police informed the LETA agency, during the campaign, police officers paid increased attention to additional daily traffic monitoring in the entire territory of the country, whether drivers obey the traffic rules, for example, they monitored compliance with the permitted driving speed, whether drivers are not driving under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances, as increased attention has also been paid to less protected road users and proper passenger transportation.

On September 18, the “European day without traffic accidents killed and seriously injured people” took place, but at the end of it, one of the most tragic traffic accidents in Latvia in recent years took place in Lizuma parish of Gulbene district, in which four young people died.

During the campaign, a total of 816 road traffic accidents took place in the country, in which 104 road users were injured. Last year, during this campaign, 843 road traffic accidents took place, in which 130 people were injured and three died.

This year, most of the detected violations were speed violations – for this, law enforcement officers stopped and prosecuted 1,555 speed violators. Also, during this week, a large number of speed violators – 12,945 – have been detected by technical means without stopping the vehicle.

One of the most serious speeding violations recorded during the campaign was recorded in Liepāja, on Lībiešu street, where the driver of a Yamaha motorcycle drove at 140 km/h in a residential area at the permitted 50 km/h, thus endangering both the surrounding road users and his own safety.

Also, this year, during the campaign, 52 drivers were caught driving while under the influence of alcohol, of which 38 drivers were held criminally liable. Three drivers were caught driving under the influence of narcotic substances, for which the State Police has also initiated criminal proceedings. In another 17 cases, drivers were held administratively responsible for aggressive driving.
