Dynamo Dresden, the top team in the 2nd Bundesliga, was eliminated in the first round of the cup. Hamburger SV did better – despite initial problems.

In May, Fortuna Düsseldorf narrowly failed to make it to the Bundesliga relegation play-offs, missing out on promotion. Now the Rhinelanders have suffered another blow: Fortuna has been eliminated in the first round of the DFB Cup. Coach Daniel Thioune’s team lost 0:2 (0:1) to third division club Dynamo Dresden and are now out.

Christoph Daferner, who played for Fortuna in the second half of last season, had given Dresden the lead after 17 minutes. In front of 29,660 spectators, Robin Meißner scored the preliminary goal (69th minute).

For 45 minutes it was not clear which of the two teams was in the second and which was in the third division. Dynamo forced Fortuna into their half with aggressive, constant pressing, impressed with quick combinations, a high level of running and imaginative moves in front of Florian Kastenmeier’s goal. If there was anything to criticize, it was the final consequence when finishing. Nothing came from Düsseldorf. The guests rarely approached the Dynamo goal, and there was no clear chance in the first half.

That changed after the break. Fortuna now pressed and had great chances through Jona Niemiec (46th) and Felix Klaus (48th), which Dynamo keeper Tim Schreiber thwarted. Dynamo needed ten minutes to calm the game down and set their own accents again. After a fine through pass from Oliver Batista Meier, Meißner scored with a well-considered shot.

Hamburger SV, on the other hand, did not let itself down at SV Meppen and is in the second round after a clear 7:1 (2:0) win over the regional league team. In front of 12,959 spectators in the sold-out Hänsch Arena, Immanuel Pherai (17th minute) and Miro Muheim (31st) made everything clear with their goals before the break. After the break, Davie Selke (56th), who had just been substituted on, again Pherai (59th), Fabio Baldé (71st), an own goal by Tim Möller (80th) and Robert Glatzel (89th) increased the score. Daniel Haritonov scored the consolation goal for the hosts in the final minute.

For Selke, it was a special goal for two reasons. Firstly, it was the first goal the Cologne-born striker had scored for HSV. Secondly, it was the right response to the insults from the Meppen fans. The spectators booed Selke (29) when he was substituted on because he had cheered in front of the Meppen fans after scoring his winning goal in the DFB Cup for his then club Hertha BSC three years ago.

Karlsruher SC has overcome its first-round trauma and has safely reached the second round of the competition. The second division team beat regional league club Sportfreunde Lotte 5-0 (2-0). Karlsruhe had previously been eliminated six times in nine first-round matches, including last year against cup horror 1. FC Saarbrücken.

The guests got off to an ideal start in the Lotter Kreuz stadium, taking the lead in the 2nd minute through David Herold, who scored from 18 metres. Lotte’s goalkeeper Laurenz Beckemeyer did not cut a good figure. In the 21st minute, Marvin Wanitzek also scored from a distance with a left-footed shot to make it 2-0. An own goal by Johannes Sabah (49th minute), a goal by Georgian international Budu Siwsiwadse (69th minute) and a goal by Bambase Conte (82nd minute) sealed the defeat for the hosts.
