Dustin Johnson wins US Open 2016 for the first time in his career

One of the most important golf tournaments, the US Open 2016, has come to an end in Pennsylvania. The American Dustin Johnson won the prestigious Major for the first time in his career. It took him 276 strokes to get through the four rounds of the competition, and runner-ups Jim Furik, Scott Piercy and Shane Lowry took 279. For world golf leaders Rory McLroy, Phil Mickelson, Ricky Fowler, the tournament turned out unsuccessfully – they dropped out of the race at different stages and did not perform in the final round. The winner of last year’s US Open 2016 Jordan Spit took 29th place after three rounds, but did not perform at full strength in the final and took the final 37th place with 289 strokes.

In the final round, Irishman Shane Lauri and Spaniard Sergio Gracia seemed to be the main contenders for victory. Both of them had an advantage over Johnson, but played unsuccessfully, losing to the American. In the final protocol, Johnson recorded 69 shots, although he struck 68. He was fined due to a controversial situation on the fifth hole. Preparing for the blow, the athlete, as the judges considered, touched the green with a putter (stick) when performing training blows. The ball moved slightly, and the golfer himself reported this to the marshal. Johnson was initially allowed to continue the game without penalty, but was later told that the final decision would be later. As a result, the athlete was still punished, attributing an additional blow to him. This decision seemed controversial to many golfers, including Johnson’s rivals. For example, Rory McLroy wrote on Twitter that the decision was “ridiculous” and called the judges “amateurs”.

For Johnson, this is the first major win. In the last two US Opens, he finished in T4 and T2 (formal fourth and second places), in last year’s PGA Championship he showed the seventh result, and also came second in this year’s British Open.
