MEPs have tightened the text requiring compliance with social and environmental standards.

Selling clothes from forced labor, wood produced in deforestation areas, exploiting hydrocarbon deposits in defiance of the objectives of the Paris agreement or financing groups accused of polluting the places they exploit… Financial problems or legal action could pile up for European companies that show little regard for their suppliers, subcontractors and business partners.

Just over a decade after the tragedy at the Rana Plaza textile factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh, which heightened media and political pressure on corporate liability, MEPs on Thursday approved a duty of care directive that could impose greater control on companies at each stage of their activity.
