It is a tradition that this time completed thirty editions but that every December is different. At the Christmas concert of El Diario Vasco, in a packed Kursaal, on this occasion Nino Bravo’s ‘Libre’ was played in the vibrant voice of Serafin ZubiriThe Pogues’ ‘Fairytale Of New York’ in the exciting piano solo of Javier Pérez de Azpeitia and, of course, the Christmas classics from the Orchestra of the Basque Countrythe choir Andra Mari and the boys and girls of the Easo Escolania. And all under the leadership of Juan José Ocóna master when it comes to engaging the audience with the magic of the stage.

Because this Christmas concert has a lot of celebration and, above all, meeting. A wide representation of Gipuzkoan society occupied the seats at the Kursaal at the event promoted by DV with the sponsorship of Sabadell Bank, Atmosphere Veolia, Amenbar and the collaboration of Lurauto. And as always, with a solidarity ending: this time the proceeds go to DYA Gipuzkoathe entity that has completed half a century of history in 2023.

The president of the Guipuzcoan DYA, Irene Tapiareceived a commemorative plaque from the hands of José María Bergarechepresident of El Diario Vasco, and recalled the intense work carried out by his institution, adapted to the new needs of society, and asked for more volunteers to join the enormous task that DYA has ahead of it.

Above, José María Bergareche, president of DV, hands his plaque to Irene Tapia, from DYA Gipuzkoa, the entity to which the proceeds were allocated.

And the music arrived at a Kursaal where it was also announced that next year the 90th anniversary of DV will be celebrated, with different activities that will extend throughout the months and will reach their most intense program in November, the exact date of the anniversary. The orchestra and choirs performed a plurality of rhythms that ranged from ‘Mesías Sarritan’ by Bartolomé de Ercilla to ‘Hallelujah’ by Händel, from the 50th anniversary of the film ‘The Coup’ with the interpretation of the legendary soundtrack by Scott Joplon to ‘Oi ama Euskal Herri’ by Benito Lertxundi.

But the most surprising and participatory moments were the performances of ‘A kiss and a flower’ and ‘Libre’, by Nino Bravo, by Serafín Zubiri who won over the audience with two songs that, from what was seen and heard, in the auditorium, they remain in the collective memory. Zubiri, who has a show on tour entirely dedicated to Nino Bravo’s repertoire, with different orchestras, seemed happy after the concert. “These songs continue to touch people deeply,” he said.

“We continue to need more volunteers,” says DYA member Irene Tapia, the entity to which the proceeds are allocated.

The director Juan José Ocón involved the audience in singing at different moments, such as ‘Libre’ by Nino Bravo

The nod to the recent death of Shane MacGowan, leader of The Pogues, with ‘Fairytale of New York’ on the piano of Javier Pérez de Azpeitia, constituted another impressive moment before the traditional ‘Adeste Fideles’ put an end with the now customary ‘prop snowfall’ on stage.

Those responsible for the newspaper, with Iñigo Barrenecheadirector general, y David Taberna, director, in front, hosted the guests. From the sponsoring companies, they posed for the initial photo Itziar Mahavedirector of the northern territorial commercial network of Banco Sabadell; Juanma Taracenageneral manager of Giroa Veolia; Ane Sarrionandiadirector of Marketing, Advertising and Communication at Amenabar, and Luismi Garcia, by Lurauto.
