Also known as “pods”, electronic cigarettes, initially developed as an alternative to conventional cigarettes, can lead to inflammation of the airways and lung tissues, increasing the risk of respiratory diseases. However, what not everyone knows is that the danger also affects the cardiovascular system.

The director of the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Circulation Regional São Paulo (SBACV-SP), Akash Prakasan highlights the damage caused to the circulation. According to him, the electronic cigarette has been increasingly present in our society.

“One of the problems is the initiation of young people in this habit, since its use can open doors to dependence, including the use of nicotine in many of the essences used”, he explains.

“False Flag”

The National Day to Combat Smoking is celebrated this Tuesday (29) and Akash points out that medicine is lagging in relation to advances in technology.

“Electronic cigarette consumption, under the false banner of being healthier, increases nicotine consumption, since the concentration is much higher than in a common cigarette, variable, since the concentration varies according to the manufacturer (minimum, around six and a maximum of 18 cigarettes)”.

Incidentally, he identifies that there were those who defended the use of the drug as a transition to stop smoking, but the studies show that this has not occurred. “Manufacturers do not always describe all the products used in their essences”.

The pods have different flavors and aromas, and rely on heating their liquid component to generate vapor.

Among these components there are propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG), essence/flavoring and coloring. In most chemical components, nicotine is also used.

Nicotine is a central nervous system stimulant that causes chemical, physical and psychological dependence, increases cardiac output, vasoconstriction and heart rate. In addition to causing a chronic inflammatory process in patients who use it.

Danger

The effects of electronic cigarettes are associated with several diseases, such as airway fibrosis, increased infarction and stroke rates, thrombosis and even the need to amputate limbs.

Cardiovascular changes occupy a prominent place with the formation of fatty plaques, calcium and other substances on the inner surface of arterial walls.

Over time, these plaques grow and can clog or rupture the arteries and migrate through the vessels. “Smoking is responsible for approximately 11% of deaths worldwide. Any way that encourages its use is a public health problem”.

More colorful, disposable or rechargeable, they are also known as vaporizers, pods, e-cigarettes, e-pipes, vapes, etc.

The Covitel 2023 report (Telephone Survey of Risk Factors for Chronic Noncommunicable Diseases in Times of Pandemic) shows that 23.9% of young Brazilians aged 18 to 24 have already used electronic cigarettes.

Student Ana Carolina Rubo, 19, reports feeling relaxed, but recognizes the effect of a “vicious cycle” caused by nicotine.

Acceptance

She says she prefers electronic cigarettes to regular cigarettes because of social acceptance. “The electronic cigarette is much more peaceful because of the smell, the device does not leave a smell on clothes, on the hand… you can smoke it anywhere. I believe that the flavors of e-cigarettes are also an essential factor for young people who are users”.

With all the negative health effects, the young crowd is still very attracted to the device. “The ease of use, the image of being healthier and more technological and the lack of control over inhaled products (due to the variability of existing presentations and concentrations) make electronic cigarettes a villain”, says Akash Prakasan
