E-commerce: with 65 transactions per second, the French market is prospering

by time news

After two atypical years in 2021 and 2022, boosted by the successive confinements where it had become essential, e-commerce confirms its establishment in the habits of the French. Its turnover continues to rise, to 146.9 billion euros for the year 2022 according to Fevad, the Federation of e-commerce and distance selling. This is an increase of 13.8% compared to 2021 (and + 8.5% vs 2019).

On average, the French place 54 orders per year, or a little more than one purchase on the Internet per week, for a total expenditure of 3515 euros. “The average basket, which had been falling for ten years, is rising again to 65 euros (+ 7%)”, explains Marc Lolivier, the general delegate of Fevad.

Services and tourism drive growth

A record turnover in France which is “the equivalent of the automotive or construction sector”, welcomed Marc Lolivier, specifying that 65 online transactions are carried out every second in France. All of these statistics are taken from data from leading e-commerce sites and from the secure payment platforms of 200,000 merchant sites.

The year 2022 was marked by a return to normal after two atypical years. Apart from consumer products, the clothing, beauty and furniture sectors were down last year but remain up compared to 2019. Services and in particular transport, tourism and leisure , heavily impacted by the pandemic, drove growth and jumped 61% compared to 2021 (+50% compared to 2019). Fevad expects to see “the bar of 200 billion euros in turnover reached in 2025”.

The rise of the second hand could help to overcome it. A study conducted among cybershoppers by DPDgroup, the main player in parcel delivery in Europe and which belongs to the French group La Poste, shows that the tricolor market is the most dynamic in this area. With a purchase frequency of 12.8 times per year compared to 12.2 on a European scale, the French stand out. “They buy on the platforms with various motivations: 70% to save money and 47% to favor a circular economy. »

The results of the Fevad attest to this. Unsurprisingly, the top three most popular sites for online shopping in France are Amazon, but also Leboncoin and Vinted.
