“There is no data that should be deleted. (…) Why should a person who traveled to another country be excluded and now the General Prosecutor’s Office is making some kind of claim due to the fact of that travel. I don’t understand this,” E. Vaitkus said to Eltai.

The leader of the Lithuanian People’s List testifies that he learned about the allegations made against E. Jagelavičius by the General Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday from the media. It was first reported by the portal “Delfi”.

“If what you said is true, then I think it is very wonderful and great. Because if the people of Lithuania elect that person to the Seimas of Lithuania, then he will have to come to the Seimas, and in that case, the prosecutor’s office will apply to the Seimas in accordance with all procedures, present arguments, and the Seimas will remove his legal immunity. And then the prosecutor’s office will be able to question him”, E. Vaitkus said to Eltai.

However, the politician assures that the allegations of the General Prosecutor’s Office “do not mean anything to him”.

According to E. Vaitkaus, in order for E. Jagelavičius to participate in the Seimas elections, he only had to fulfill one requirement – to register in Lithuania.

“He had the only problem – he was no longer registered in Lithuania, so he managed to manage the registration of his place of residence. Here he was given a deadline by which time he needs to complete the registration. He managed to register and as a citizen of Lithuania with a constitutional right, he participates in the Seimas elections,” said the leader of the list of the Lithuanian People’s Party for the Seimas elections.

“If journalists don’t like it, if the Lithuanian authorities don’t like it, if the Lithuanian prosecutor’s office doesn’t like it, it doesn’t matter. Lithuanian people will decide how much he is worth or not,” he added.

The General Prosecutor’s Office in Elta confirmed on Tuesday that E. Jagelavičius is currently wanted by law enforcement and is a suspect.

Tried to register as an independent candidate

In turn, the Central Election Commission (CEC) informed that R. Jagelavičius had already tried to register in the elections as a self-nominated candidate. However, the commission emphasizes, the declaration documents of this person were rejected.

“Edikas Jagelavičius tried to fill out documents to participate in the upcoming Seimas elections as a self-nominated candidate at the end of July. This time, his documents were rejected because he had not registered as an independent political campaign participant and had not paid an election deposit. He did not have time to register as an independent participant in the political campaign, as the registration deadline had already expired,” CEC representative Indrė Ramanavičienė told Elta.

However, later the commission received his documents together with the declaration documents of the list of candidates nominated by the Lithuanian People’s Party.

“It is not necessary to come to the CEC to run for election. It is enough to connect to the CEC’s information system online using electronic means of communication, as the submission of application documents to participate in the elections takes place online,” explained I. Ramanavičienė.

Currently, the verification of application documents of future candidates is underway, when the CEC verifies whether the documents submitted by more than 1,700 future candidates and the data contained in them are in order and whether the future candidates meet the legal requirements to participate in the elections. This process should be completed by September 12, as this is the last day when candidates must be registered, the CEC informs.

As the “Delfi” portal writes, E. Jagelavičius stood independently in the elections in the single-mandate district. And although he was late in submitting certain documents to the Central Election Commission (CEC), his name can be found among other candidates of the Lithuanian People’s Party.

According to the portal, E. Jagelavičius has been living in Belarus since 2022, as he is suspected and wanted by Lithuanian law enforcement for acting with other states against Lithuania, as well as for providing false information to the institution.
