Ongoing issues with E3 2.0

The background of the delay is the ongoing problems in the development of the new software architecture, called E3 2.0, the report says. E3 stands for “end-to-end electronic architecture”. The new vehicle platform SSP (Scalable System Platform) is intended to use the 2.0 software being developed by the subsidiary of the Cariad Group (g+). However, since the software is significantly delayed, the proposed SSP-based models would have to reach the market in short periods. But that doesn’t work, writes the magazine, citing company information.

Another reason for the delay is the improvement of the modular electric propulsion device (MEB), called MEB+, which is planned for 2025. This should improve range and efficiency by about ten percent. For such an investment to be worthwhile, it would have to run longer than previously planned. So the SSP models would have to be used for the first time later.

According to the report, it is not out of the question that VW will completely forget the 2.0 software architecture in the future and will use the new cooperation partner Rivian. But that’s more of a thing “Ideas”. VW may benefit from the cooperation with the Chinese supplier Xpeng and Rivian with the small car ID.2, which is to be presented at the end of 2025.
