EA Closes BioWare and Cancels Next Mass Effect Project

Electronic Arts has announced the closure of BioWare and the cancellation of its early-stage Mass Effect project amid a wave of 400 layoffs. The sudden restructuring follows the publisher’s massive $55 billion buyout and heavy debt burden.

The closure brings an abrupt end to a 30-year history that established the studio as a defining force in role-playing games. Electronic Arts confirmed the cuts in a staff letter that also cancelled a Sims-related project codenamed Project Lotus while shifting focus toward sports titles, Apex Legends, and ongoing Marvel and Star Wars initiatives. The publisher also plans to prioritize another project known internally as Project Evergreen. BioWare was founded in 1995 and acquired by the company in 2007. BioWare ventured into the live-service space for the initial time in 2011 with the MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic, later returning to the model with Anthem in 2019. At this point, the legendary developer behind Mass Effect, Baldur’s Gate, Dragon Age, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and other titles has ceased to exist.

Buyout Debt and Cost-Cutting Behind Studio Closure

The transaction saddled EA with approximately $18 billion in debt.

To satisfy investors, executives pledged $700 million in annual cost reductions, partly through reductions in research and development. Those measures triggered job losses affecting roughly 3% of EA’s global workforce, with approximately 50 positions cut at BioWare before the studio itself was dissolved.

BioWare struggled commercially in its final years. Its 2019 live-service title Anthem suffered a notoriously troubled launch and failed to meet financial goals, while Dragon Age: The Veilguard failed to reach internal sales targets, prompting staffing reductions.

Unrealized Multiverse Plans for Mass Effect Universe

Before the studio closed, developers were building the next installment under the working title Mass Effect Universe. Former technical director Romain Toutain revealed on a Twitch stream that the game was designed around player choices carried over from the original trilogy and Andromeda. The project would not have featured a predefined character, but rather a customizable N7 agent who bore similarities to James Bond and John Wick.

According to development insights shared online, the project used save files to generate parallel timelines, allowing players absolute autonomy and branching paths reminiscent of Spike Chunsoft’s Zero Time Dilemma. Leaks also indicated the story would have been set 600 years after the Reaper War, featuring a fractured galaxy controlled by three distinct factions.

The cancellation also claimed promotional material across other EA properties. Following the announcement, the publisher quietly removed N7-themed cosmetic items—including weapon skins, decals, and a Normandy ship charm—that players had discovered in Battlefield 6 ahead of the annual N7 Day celebration.

Fan Protests and the Uncertain Fate of Franchise Rights

Franchise supporters immediately mobilized in response to the shutdown, launching a Change.org petition. Organizers urged EA to either dedicate adequate resources to a future installment or sell the intellectual property to another developer.

Some fans directed appeals toward other studios, including Palworld developer Pocketpair, whose communications and publishing head John Buckley noted that incoming messages asking studios to acquire abandoned franchises are common whenever a high-profile closure occurs. Buckley cautioned that corporate IP acquisitions are exceptionally complex and often misaligned with market values.

Industry veterans remain skeptical that EA will part with its catalog.
