EA Shuts BioWare and Cancels Mass Effect Universe Project

Electronic Arts has shut down BioWare and canceled its in-development Mass Effect Universe project, cutting more than 400 jobs following the company’s private equity buyout earlier this summer.

Operating under president and chief studios officer Cam Weber and president and COO David Tinson, Electronic Arts evaluated its business operations across several months before moving forward with the studio closures. The restructuring impacts approximately 3% of the corporation’s global workforce. For more than thirty years, BioWare operated as a home for developers, writers, and players who brought fantastical worlds to life across celebrated franchises like Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age, and Anthem.

The closure of the Edmonton-based studio marks the end of a 30-year run that produced genre-defining role-playing games such as Baldur’s Gate and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The studio’s legacy dates back to its early days in PC circles as a prominent computer role-playing game developer, famously winning IGN’s Game of the Year award in 1998 for Baldur’s Gate over Half-Life. It also earned wide acclaim for 2005’s Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic before crafting the space opera trilogy that defined a generation of sci-fi gaming.

Inside the Mass Effect Project Trailer Leak

Before the plug was pulled, a small skeleton crew at BioWare was quietly working on the fifth installment of the sci-fi franchise, operating under the title Mass Effect: Universe.

Following the studio’s shuttering, an unreleased trailer surfaced online, showing in-engine pre-production footage of a new protagonist interacting with an asari woman in a crowded bar before revealing the return of iconic character Liara T’Soni. This distant setting meant the Mass Relays had long been rebuilt and technology had advanced to a singular point, allowing writers to acknowledge past choices from Mass Effect 3 while bypassing the need to establish a single rigid canon ending.

Sci-fi authors Catherynne M. Valente and Derek Kunsken also revealed they had spent years writing for the title, with Valente describing the work as one of the greatest privileges of her life. The leaked footage shows the default male hero working as a soldier and spy across multiple planets, eventually teaming up with Liara using guns and telekinetic abilities to take down rogue elements.

It was one of the greatest privileges & GLORIOUS challenges of my life. I smiled every day. I worked HARD for the fans, every day.

Derek Kunsken echoed similar sentiments regarding the collaborative writing effort, noting that the team was cooking up a compelling narrative experience. Meanwhile, Michael Gamble, who spent 17 years at the studio, shared messages of gratitude with fans as the project was terminated alongside 50 developers dedicated to its early-stage production.

Financial Pressures Following the Buyout

The studio’s demise follows Electronic Arts going private this summer through a transaction that left the publisher holding heavy debt, turning executive focus toward cost containment and high-margin franchises like The Sims and skate.

While BioWare enjoyed a golden era between 1998 and 2014, the past decade brought mounting commercial and creative struggles, including the mixed receptions of Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2017, the live-service shooter Anthem in 2019, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard in 2024. That final fantasy release arrived during a historically stacked year filled with massive industry competitors like Astro Bot, Palworld, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and Elden Ring’s downloadable content, which minimized its breakout potential amid an already tumultuous development cycle that saw prototypes restarted multiple times.
