Defensive end Derek Barnett has been waived by the Philadelphia Eagles, according to a report from Adam Schefter of ESPN. Barnett has been inactive for the last two games and has not practiced with the team this week due to personal reasons.
Barnett, a 2017 first-round pick, has struggled to make an impact this season, recording only three tackles in eight appearances. Throughout his tenure with the Eagles, Barnett has accumulated 150 tackles, 21.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. He also contributed nine tackles, 1.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery in five postseason appearances.
The decision to release Barnett opens up a roster spot for the Eagles, and there is speculation that the team may be interested in signing linebacker Shaquille Leonard, who was recently released by the Indianapolis Colts. However, it is unclear if Barnett’s release is directly related to any potential pursuit of Leonard.
The Eagles will look to fill the void left by Barnett’s departure as they continue their pursuit of a playoff spot this season.
