Eyewitnesses report that a tree blown down by the wind also blocked the carriageway in the direction of Riga to the Tallinn highway in Baltezer, but the place of the accident was relatively easily passable.
As a result of the intense rain, large puddles can also be observed in many places, which have formed when the sewage systems cannot cope with the large amount of water. Such a situation was observed, for example, on Brīvības Street near the former VEF factory, while Lāčplēša Street under the railway embankment was freely passable, even though the street regularly flooded in this place before the reconstruction.
Meanwhile, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) maintains a red warning in Riga due to extremely heavy rain until 18:00 in the evening.
According to VUGD, it is expected that under the influence of extremely heavy rain, extensive areas, properties and transport infrastructure will be flooded. In case of danger, residents are invited to leave the threatened areas and follow the instructions of the responsible authorities. Damage to road infrastructure is expected, roads may be impassable and blocked in some sections.
Also, there is a high risk that electricity and water supply, telecommunication communications will be disrupted.
