The manifesto of the new Neapolitan environmental movement that brings together university professors, entrepreneurs, artists and patrons and communication professionals

The next 22 April will be dedicated to the 50th WORLD EARTH DAY; we will give voice to a multidisciplinary environmental movement in Naples driven by the common desire to interact constructively with citizens and institutions.

A path made up of interventions and testimonies of experts, activists, citizens and entrepreneurs, all united by the common desire to establish a proactive dialogue about the environment and the protection of nature and the territory. A dialogue that must necessarily look at both global issues and local needs. Naples and Campania have a naturalistic, landscape and agricultural heritage of inestimable value. Ours is a region that has a visceral and intrinsic link with the earth, intended as a creator of life and as a carrier of work, nourishment and well-being.

Among the protagonists of this series of meetings: Lorenzo Ambrosino director and filmmaker; Catherine the Archdeacon, Professor of Community Psychology at the Federico II University of Naples and coordinator of the PhD in Gender Studies at the same university, researcher in the field of critical and community psychology, with particular interest in the construction of well-being in the organization social locally and globally; Domenico Barbato representative in Naples of Extinction Rebellion, an international environmental association based in London; Giorgio Budillon, Director of the Department of Science and Technology of the University of Naples Parthenope; Davide Maranta ecological philosopher; Roberto di Meo wine entrepreneur and enolologist; Sergio Fermariello artist; Alex Giordano, professor of digital transformation and social innovation at the Department of Social Sciences of the Federico II University of Naples and scientific director of SOCIETING4.0; Peppe Morra, gallery owner active for over twenty years with the association “AMICI DELLA VIGNA SAN MARTINO, a naturalistic paradise that extends for seven hectares in the city center, a rare example at European level of an urban farm; Franco Rendano, surgeon and founder of the historic Lanificio 25, a forge of creativity and concrete initiatives for the territory that has made BE GREEN its lite motiv; Denis Volpiana artist.

It is necessary to face the environmental crisis on several fronts, in a regime of total collaboration. And if markets and institutions do not build alternatives and paths of immediate realization, as would be necessary, it is the citizens who have to mobilize.

Science is all on the side of the environment, whose fragility it recognizes in the face of the global capitalist production system. We are on the verge of the extinction of humanity, the ices of the poles have never been so thin, the air, water and food are increasingly polluted, and the solar star that brings life is in danger of becoming, due to of human impact, the scourge of a future overheated and devastated by mass migration and floods.

For the first time in human history we have exceeded 420ppm (parts per million) of CO2 (carbon dioxide) concentration in the atmosphere. The threshold not to be exceeded to comply with the 2015 Paris Accords is 450ppm!

It is easy to put on the blinders and go our own way, thinking that we are not part of the mechanism that is destroying the planet and delegating more drastic actions to future generations. But the truth is that we are all part of the same wonderful global body and are all responsible for it accordingly.

Covid 19 caused 129,215,179 confirmed cases in the world with 2,820,098 deaths, in Italy 3,532,057 confirmed cases of 107,933 deaths; a global catastrophe that can teach us to stick together, as it has shown us how fragile we are.

This severe pandemic is only a symptom of EARTH’s malaise; it is necessary to act on the causes that have determined it in order to avoid its repetition, which scientists believe is certain if it is not done promptly by stimulating public opinion and political institutions.

It is clear that the causes are to be found among the numerous practices and conditions of the globalized world; from intensive farming to the poor quality of the food we eat, the air we breathe and the water we humans and all other animals and plants drink.

Man with his ingenuity has brought about radical changes in the system of life on Earth in a positive sense with medicine and cutting-edge technologies.

However, the same ingenuity has caused a series of disasters that are there for all to see.

But it is the same ingenuity that will be able to save mankind and the Planet with the support of a well-informed and conscious public opinion, which pushes politics towards choices that go in the right direction.
