Earthquake in Türkiye: Thirteen deaths among Moroccan nationals (Embassy)

Istanbul – The death toll among the Moroccan community in Turkey, in the violent earthquake that struck the south of the country, now stands at thirteen, the Kingdom’s Embassy in Ankara said on Thursday.

Three new deaths have been recorded, adding to the ten announced earlier, the diplomatic representation said.

A strong earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale shook the Pazarcık district of Kahramanmaraş in southern Turkey on Monday, causing massive damage to the towns of “Gaziantep”, “Adana”, “Malatya”, “Diyarbakir”, “Sanliurfa” and “Osmaniye”, in addition to the epicenter.

A few hours after this first violent shock, another earthquake struck north of the city of Gaziantep with almost the same intensity and close to the epicenter of the first earthquake, which worsened the toll of the disaster.

The death toll to date stands at more than 36,000 dead and 100,000 injured.

Turkish authorities have declared official mourning for a period of seven days and a state of emergency in the affected areas for three months.
