Earthquake: The High Atlas Development Agency will be responsible for implementing the reconstruction program for the most affected schools (minister)
Rabat – The Minister of National Education, Preschool and Sports, Chakib Benmoussa, indicated on Monday that his department will entrust the High Atlas Development Agency with the execution of the reconstruction and rehabilitation program of the most affected schools, for a total cost of approximately 4 billion dirhams.
In response to an oral question in the House of Representatives on “the emergency plan for the rehabilitation of the education sector in the areas affected by the earthquake”, Mr. Benmoussa noted that the said program will be carried out in compliance with the heritage and architectural specificities of the affected areas, and in accordance with updated earthquake-resistant standards, stating that the ministry is currently working on launching, with the competent offices, technical studies with a view to meeting the challenge of rebuilding and rehabilitating the affected establishments so that they are operational at the start of the next school year.
At the same time, the implementation of an integrated development program for the affected areas will allow the upgrading of educational and sports provision in these regions, for a budget of 5 billion dirhams, he continued, stressing that the ministry aims, through this development project, to win the bet of improving the indicators of the education system in the affected areas.
To this end, he noted, the program pays particular attention to the creation of local schools, with the provision and optimization of school transport services. It also proposes to increase the number of municipal schools offering boarding services, school transport, and housing for teachers.
Spread over 5 years, this program will take into account the integrated development programs of emerging centers and housing groups that will emerge as part of the rehabilitation of areas affected by the earthquake.
