The Navy and Coast Guard conducted the East Sea Territory Defense Training (formerly Dokdo Defense Training) on the 21st in preparation for the Japanese far-right forces’ attempted landing on Dokdo. However, the Marine Corps and other Korean military forces did not conduct training to directly land on Dokdo and drive out the imaginary Japanese far-right forces, and the training was conducted in secret without prior notice. There were criticisms that this was done in consideration of the fact that the Japanese government protested to our government every time the Dokdo Defense Training was announced. The Japanese government also protested during the training in December of last year, and our government refuted it as an “unfair claim.”
According to military authorities on this day, the training was conducted in the waters off Dokdo with the participation of 4 to 5 ships, including naval destroyers and coast guard patrol boats. The number of troops and power deployed was said to be similar to previous years.
This year, in addition to the maritime training in which Navy and Coast Guard vessels deployed together in the waters near Dokdo, there was no landing training in which the military and police were directly deployed. This is why there was an interpretation that the level was adjusted in consideration of Korea-Japan relations. Regarding this, a government official said, “In the past, there were many cases in which landings were not conducted depending on the training scenario composition,” and “The East Sea territorial defense training is conducted regularly twice a year and is mostly conducted behind closed doors. It is not conscious of Japan.”
This training, which has been conducted since 1986, has been conducted five times since the inauguration of the Yoon Seok-yeol government in May 2022, and all of them were conducted privately. The military authorities stated, “The guidelines are to conduct the East Sea territorial defense training twice a year, so we plan to conduct it once more within the year.” Under the previous government, the military authorities conducted large-scale public training by mobilizing Air Force fighter jets and Marine Corps landing forces.
