San Diego Authorities Indict 34 in Major East Village Drug Operation

A sweeping law enforcement effort targeting open-air drug dealing in San Diego’s East Village culminated in indictments against 34 individuals accused of trafficking fentanyl, methamphetamine, and crack cocaine. The operation, dubbed “Operation Street Sweeper,” aimed to dismantle drug markets and improve public safety in a downtown area grappling with escalating crime.

The indictments, handed down Monday, follow months of surveillance and undercover operations conducted last September and October. Authorities focused on areas identified as drug sale hotspots, including 16th and 17th streets, K and C streets, and Imperial Avenue and Broadway. Twenty-three of the defendants were arrested last Thursday in East Village, according to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office.

Targeting Open-Air Drug Markets

The focus of “Operation Street Sweeper” was the eradication of “open-air” drug markets, which prosecutors say not only facilitated drug distribution but also fueled other criminal activity in the surrounding neighborhoods. The operation reflects a proactive approach to addressing community concerns and improving the quality of life for residents.

“This operation reflects a coordinated, proactive law enforcement response to the community we serve, with the goal of improving the quality of life in a downtown area that continues to face public safety challenges,” stated a senior official from the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office.

The crackdown comes as the region struggles with a growing overdose crisis. According to authorities, the increase in drug sales directly correlates with a rise in drug overdoses in the targeted areas.

Multi-Agency Collaboration

“Operation Street Sweeper” was a collaborative effort involving the San Diego Police Department, the Homeland Security Investigations Fentanyl Abatement Suppression Team, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The U.S. Attorney’s Office is currently prosecuting three additional defendants connected to the case.

“The residents of East Village have long asked for more enforcement on drug-related offenses and Operation Street Sweeper did just that,” said a spokesperson for the San Diego Police Department. “With this operation, we targeted open drug use and narcotic sales occurring in East Village, something children and families walked by every day. With our law enforcement partners, we were able to have a major impact on the quality of life in downtown San Diego.”

The indictments charge the defendants with various crimes related to drug sales and possession. Authorities emphasize the importance of continued vigilance and collaboration to combat the ongoing challenges posed by illegal drug activity and ensure the safety and well-being of the East Village community.
