EastEnders: Rob Kazinsky returns full-time as Sean Slater

Rob Kazinsky is returning to EastEnders to reprise his role as Sean Slater later this year. Although his character has made brief appearances in recent years, it has been 17 years since Sean permanently lived in Albert Square, with producers promising a dramatic new storyline.

The BBC soap confirmed that the actor will bring his volatile character back to Walford for his family and for reasons that remain under wraps. The return marks a major full-time comeback for a character whose departure in 2009 left a trail of unresolved chaos across the Square.

A Decade and a Half Away from Albert Square

Kazinsky first arrived in Walford in 2006 as a central member of the Slater family, appearing alongside his on-screen mother Jean, played by Gillian Wright, and sister Stacey, played by Lacey Turner. His explosive initial stint ended on New Year’s Day in 2009 following a dramatic storyline involving Roxy Mitchell, played by Rita Simons.

That exit saw Sean discover that the daughter he believed was his, Amy Mitchell, had actually been fathered by Jack Branning, played by Scott Maslen. The revelation caused the ex-military character to spiral, culminating in a desperate attempt to drive himself, Roxy, and Amy into a frozen lake before backing out at the last moment and fleeing Walford.

While the character made surprise appearances in 2019, 2021, and 2022—most notably supporting Jean through an ovarian cancer diagnosis while addressing his own mental health struggles—he has not been a permanent resident in the neighborhood for nearly two decades.

Behind the Return: What the Actor and Producers Say

Reflecting on his decision to rejoin the cast, Kazinsky noted the personal significance of stepping back into the role as an older performer.

“I left EastEnders in 2008 as a 23-year-old boy and was lucky to spend the next 19 years of my life working around the world, always championing EastEnders and stating the fact that one day I wanted to walk in Sean’s shoes again – but this time as a man, to see who Sean the man might also be.”

The actor added that he wanted to do it for himself, for the character, and for the fans who have supported him in every role since he left the Square. Executive Producer Ben Wadey expressed enthusiasm about the casting coup.

“I’m delighted to welcome Rob Kazinsky back to EastEnders as he reprises the role of Sean Slater later this year. Sean Slater was a big part of the Slater family and as viewers will already know, where Sean goes, drama is not far behind.”

Feuds, Romances, and Unfinished Business in Walford

During his initial run on the show, Sean established himself as one of Albert Square’s most volatile figures. Beyond his turbulent marriage to Roxy Mitchell, he was known for turbulent romances with Tanya Branning and Ruby Allen.

His historical list of adversaries featured Max Branning, Johnny Allen, and Jake Moon. The broadcaster noted that his past actions resulted in the destruction of multiple familial relationships in Walford, setting a high bar for disruption when he steps back onto the Square.

What Remains Unclear Ahead of the Comeback

While the network confirmed that Sean is moving back for his family, the exact catalyst driving his return has been kept under tight wraps. Viewers are left waiting to see how the character will reintegrate with the Slaters—particularly Stacey and Jean—and how residents of Walford will react to the return of a man who left a trail of broken relationships in his wake.
