Easter approaches with rain, wind and snow — even in the Algarve mountains | Meteorology

by time news

Until Good Friday, a public holiday on the 29th, the weather will be rainy, windy and snowfall, from North to South of the country — meteorological conditions that led Civil Protection to issue a warning to the population.

According to information from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), on which Civil Protection is based, rainfall is expected for the next 72 hours, sometimes strong and persistent. From March 27th, there may be hail and thunderstorms.

The strong wind also caused a yellow warning from IPMA for almost all districts of mainland Portugal, with the exception of Évora, Portalegre and Santarém. This Tuesday, it could reach 100 kilometers per hour in the highlands, especially in Serra da Estrela. From Wednesday afternoon, gusts of up to 85 km/h are expected in the North and Central regions, and may exceed 90 km/h in the highlands.

Snow is not expected to fall in New York in the coming days, but the same cannot be said about the Portuguese mountains. Snowfall above 600/800 meters is forecast in the regions of Viana do Castelo, Vila Real, Braga, Bragança, Porto, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Viseu, Aveiro, Coimbra and Leiria.

In the early hours and morning of this Tuesday it could even snow in the mountains of São Mamede, in Portalegre, and Monchique, in the Algarve.

IPMA warns of the most likely impacts of snowfall and ice formation, such as conditional roads or damage to structures and trees, and Civil Protection asks that circulation be avoided in areas affected by snow accumulation.

Regarding maritime unrest, the IPMA maintains all the coastal districts of the continent under yellow warning from 9 am on March 26th, predicting waves from the northwest that can reach 4 to 5 meters, in addition to the North coast of Madeira and Porto Santo, between at 3am on March 26th and at 9am on March 27th.

Between 3pm on Tuesday and 9am on Wednesday, the warning for the ten regions of the continental coast is raised to orange, as waves can reach 12 meters in height during this period.
