Eating breakfast early can avoid the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. It is one of the main conclusions of a study that followed more than 100 thousand participants in France for several years. These results confirm the use of so-called “chrononutrition”, the association between diet, circadian rhythms and health.

Early breakfastbefore eight in the morning, can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes (this type accounts for around 90% of diabetes cases).

This is what experts from the Barcelona Institute of Global Health point out (ISGlobal)who participated in a study that has a French cohort of more than one hundred thousand participants, NutriNet Health.

The results of this study indicate that the risk of diabetes can be reduced not only by modifying the diet but also the time at which one eats, the so-called chrono nutrition.

Type two diabetes is associated with modifiable risk factors, such as an unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, or smoking.

But there is also another important factor and that is the time at which we eat. Since the schedule plays a key role in regulating the so-called circadian rhythms and the control of glucose and lipids.

Early breakfast, early dinner

The researchers also found that a late dinner (after 10 p.m.) appears to increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, while eating more frequently (about five times a day) was associated with a lower incidence. Instead, extending the fast is only beneficial if it is done having breakfast early (before 8 in the morning) and having dinner soon also.

“Our results suggest that having a first meal before 8 a.m. and a last meal before 7 p.m. could help reduce the incidence of type 2 diabetes,” he concludes. Manolis Kogevinas, researcher at ISGlobal and co-author of the study. In fact, the same ISGlobal team had already provided evidence on the association between dining early and a lower risk of breast or prostate cancer.

Taken together, these results consolidate the use of crononutrición (i.e., the association between diet, circadian rhythms and health) to prevent type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases.

another study with the same group of people NutriNet Santé confirms that eating breakfast and early dinner could also reduce cardiovascular risk.
