The EC announced that the “Achema” plan will help achieve the goals of the European Union’s Hydrogen Strategy, the European Green Deal and the Green Deal Industrial Plan, as well as contribute to ending dependence on Russian fossil fuels.
In the Commission’s assessment, the impact of state aid on market competition will be minimal.
“Achema”, which is part of one of Lithuania’s largest company groups, “Achema Grupe”, announced last April plans to build a green hydrogen production plant with a capacity of 213 megawatts (MW) by the fall of 2027. The company estimates that the cost of the project will be 344 million euros.
In October, the Lithuanian Ministry of Economy and Innovation proposed to attract 122.65 million euros from the European Union funds to the project.
The EC informed that with its financing means, a 171 MW alkaline electrolyzer will be built at the “Achema” production facility in Jonava, which will allow the production of renewable hydrogen with a low level of carbon dioxide emissions. Hydrogen is planned to be used in ammonia production. The electrolyzer is planned to replace 30% of the hydrogen that is currently produced using natural gas.
On the other hand, “Achema” plans to receive energy for hydrogen production from the Pagēgi wind park. The construction of a 40-turbine wind farm with a capacity of 248 MW will start this year. “Achemos group” plans to invest more than 400 million euros in it.
In December, “Achema” announced that it plans to invest around two billion euros in 10-15 years to switch to green chemistry in production.
The Ministry of Finance of Lithuania announced last year that “Achema” is the country’s largest industrial polluter, accounting for approximately 41% of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions.
