The omikron variants BA.2, BA.4 and BA.5 are no longer regarded as so-called ‘variants of concern’, reports the European health service ECDC. Those sub-variants of the corona virus are no longer circulating on the continent, it sounds. Due to the decision, corona variants are no longer officially circulating, which is of great concern.

If a variant is particularly contagious or harmful, it is classified as a ‘variant of concern’. The fact that there are no more corona variants on that list is consistent with the “stable epidemiological situation” in Europe at the moment, according to the ECDC.
At the moment there are many different sub-variants of omikron, including descendants of BA.2 and BA.5. The most important subvariants are still on two other ECDC lists (‘variant of interest’ and ‘variant under monitoring’), which means that the institute will continue to keep a close eye on these variants. Furthermore, the ECDC emphasizes that this does not mean that corona no longer poses a threat. New, more harmful variants of the virus can always emerge.
