ECHR refused to transfer Saakashvili from prison hospital to private clinic

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) called on former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili to end his hunger strike, which he announced on October 1, and ordered the Georgian authorities to inform the politician about the state of health. At the same time, the court refused to transfer from the prison hospital to a private clinic.

“The Strasbourg court did not satisfy Saakashvili’s complaint about the transfer to a private clinic and demanded an end to the hunger strike,” the Georgian Justice Ministry’s Facebook page says.

As the lawyer of ex-president Nika Gvaramia told reporters, the ECHR also ordered the Georgian leadership to inform about the state of health of Mr. Saakashvili and about all medical interventions. “We received a response from the ECHR, which noted that the Strasbourg court calls on Mikhail Saakashvili to end the hunger strike, therefore, at the same time, it recognizes the fact that Saakashvili is indeed starving,” he said (quoted by Interfax).

Mikheil Saakashvili was arrested after arriving in Georgia during the country’s first round of municipal elections. Several criminal cases have been initiated against Mr. Saakashvili in Georgia.

On November 9, the “Opposition Coalition” of Georgia, including the largest opposition party “United National Movement” (UNM) of Mikhail Saakashvili, as well as civil activists held a rally outside the building of the Ministry of Justice. Oppositionists demand to transfer the ex-president from the Gldani prison, where he was placed on November 8, in the evening, to the private clinic Vivamedi. There, under a contract with the department, sick prisoners are often treated.
