Reduced prices should affect groceries

Economists urged Russians not to buy buckwheat a year in advance and not to be afraid of empty shelves in supermarkets during the New Year holidays. The main for our country cereals will not rise in price – this is the forecast of experts on the consumer market. But the price tags for the “borscht set”, pineapples and avocados can go up.

For food prices after the New Year holidays, economists predict moderate fluctuations – some items from the usual list will rise in price, others may even fall in price.

The decline may primarily affect domestic grocery. These are cereals, baking mixes, legumes and Russian sunflower oil.

Experts are in a hurry to stop those who like to fill the buffet with buckwheat to the eyeballs “for a rainy day”: there is no point in such purchases now – except to arrange a feast for the kitchen bugs. There is also no need to purchase flour for future use. The price tag for it is also unlikely to change much compared to the end of last year.

– Prices will not rise for those positions where there was a good harvest. These are cereals, legumes and buckwheat, – says Alexander Borisov, chairman of the committee for the development of the consumer market of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation, in terms of buckwheat, we are completely dependent on its main producer, Altai Territory. There is unstable productivity there. In one year it is high, and a lot of cereals enter the market, prices go down. A crash may occur next year and prices rise. Citizens perceive this negatively, although this trend is fully consistent with the laws of a market economy.

But the forecast for vegetables and fruits is not so optimistic. Fans of overseas delicacies – pineapples, mangoes, avocados and even banal oranges – should expect a drop in prices not earlier than late spring, when a new crop is reaped in the homeland of these products.

Moreover, even the usual “borscht set” – beets, potatoes, carrots and cabbage – will definitely not fall in price in the coming months, but rather will even pick up in price.

But one should not be afraid of orphaned counters in stores, where after the new year there may not be cucumbers or cottage cheese of a favorite brand, one should not, experts urge.

– After the pre-New Year’s abundance, the counters of many shops have become scarce. This is sometimes disconcerting. But in reality, this is just a break in the supply chain. With the resumption of the working week, the assortment will be restored, but prices will also begin to move, and this movement for different types of food will be multidirectional, – said Alexander Borisov.

True, the low-key optimist of consumer market analysts ends up when it comes to inflation. According to financiers, its level can go off scale for 10% per year.

“The decade we have recently entered will correspond not even to the previous one, but to“ zero ”. In those years, inflation was measured in double digits. This year it will be about 6-8%, which is higher than the figures indicated by the Central Bank, – said the head of the CCI committee.
