Within the framework of the VII Oil, Gas and Energy Summit, the Ecopetrol Group, through its hydrocarbon transportation subsidiary Cenit, and the Promigas company announced an ambitious initiative to connect the gas markets of the coast and the interior of the country.

This alliance seeks to guarantee a balance between the supply and demand of natural gas in Colombiaoptimizing the existing infrastructure and offering a reliable solution for the supply of this energy.

During the press conference after his speech at the Summit, Ricardo Roa Barragán, president of Ecopetrol, highlighted the strategic importance of this connection for the country. “The new connection between the two markets is a great opportunity to achieve a circuit that guarantees greater reliability in the gas supply throughout the country. In addition, it gives the National Natural Gas Transportation System the capacity to meet demand at a time when the country needs to develop infrastructure solutions that generate minimal environmental and social impacts,” said Roa.

The joint proposal of Ecopetrol and Promigas proposes the reconversion of infrastructure used for the transportation of crude oil into gas pipelineswhich would make it possible to efficiently take advantage of the investments already made, reducing implementation times and offering greater flexibility for gas supply both in the short and medium term.

Among the main sources of gas that could benefit from this reconversion are the local production fields in the Lower Magdalena Valley and the Sinú San Jacinto basin, in addition to imported gas that reaches the Caribbean Coast. In the future, this infrastructure could also facilitate the transportation of gas from offshore fields in the Caribbean Sea.

This new connection between markets represents a comprehensive solution that will not only optimize the transportation of natural gas, but will also contribute to the country’s energy sustainability. By integrating diverse production sources and guaranteeing a more secure and flexible supply, Colombia will be able to more efficiently face the growing demand for this vital resource, especially in a context of energy transition and sustainability.

Impact on the National Transportation System

The reconversion of infrastructure is a key strategy in this proposal, since it will allow optimal use of investments in crude oil and gas transportation, reducing times and costs associated with the construction of new gas pipelines. Furthermore, this measure responds to the need to minimize environmental and social impacts, an increasingly relevant aspect in energy projects.

For their part, Promigas and Cenit will jointly evaluate the alternatives to connect the different gas markets in the country, thus guaranteeing that all the regulations and authorizations necessary to launch this project are met.
