Ecuador announces national blackout for “maintenance” of the electrical system

Ecuador will be without electricity for at least eight hours next Wednesday night and early Thursday morning due to a ““preventive maintenance” in the power transmission systemthe Presidency announced on Sunday.

Let us remember that Ecuador suffered scheduled blackouts of up to 13 hours last April due to a prolonged drought that reduced the number of reservoirs for hydroelectric power generation to a minimum. The Mazar dam in the province of Azuaywhich supplies the country’s main hydroelectric plant, reached 0% water levels in the middle of that month.

The cuts ended temporarily in May with the return of the rains, but new rationing was decreed in June due to the sediment accumulation in Mazar.

A week ago, a new temporary blackout came without warning “due to a failure in the bar” of a substation connected to the Paute generation system, the government announced at the time. National Electricity Operator (Cenace).

The electricity sector was declared in a state of emergency in August due to new records of low river flows.

That month, a barge operated by the Turkish company Karpowershipwith a capacity of 100 megawatts, was anchored to the Guayas River in Guayaquil to “cover the energy deficit” in the country, said the Vice Minister of Electricity, Rafael Quintero, at the time.

In Ecuador, 92% of electrical energy comes from hydroelectric plants.
