Through a statement, the Foreign Ministry of Ecuador announced yesterday the initiation of a lawsuit against Mexico before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for alleged violations of international law, as well as for insulting statements and granting asylum to former vice president Jorge Glass at the embassy in Quito, when pointing out the process against him for various crimes.
According to the office shared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility of the Andean country, “presented the lawsuit against Mexico at the International Court of Justice for violations of a series of international obligations due to the conduct of that country since December 17, 2023.”
“The lawsuit also refers to the insulting statements made by the president of Mexico”, added the document.
The Government of Ecuador requires the CIJ to sanction Mexico for failing to comply with article 41 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961, in addition to our country’s non-intervention in the internal affairs of President Daniel Noboa.
In addition to pointing out the alleged violation of the principle of non-intervention, Ecuador accused the president Andrés Manuel López Obrador of making “false and insulting” statements about the electoral process held in 2023.
The International Court will be in charge of analyzing today and tomorrow all the evidence presented by both parties to make a decision and issue the appropriate sanctions.
